On Saturday April 29th, the Hamilton Tenants Solidarity Network (HTSN) invites you to join us for a full day of free workshops, information sessions, skill-shares and discussions, where renters from across Hamilton can come together to figure out what a tenant-led solution to the housing crisis might look like, and what practical steps we can take to get there.

The goal of this event is to help our fellow tenants build the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to organize successfully with their neighbours. This conference will provide a space for current and future organizers to connect, share their experiences, and build momentum for organizing in this city moving forward.

Hamilton is in the midst of a serious housing crisis. Rents are going up all across our city, as rising property values chip away at the city’s available rental housing stock. Despite soaring demand, there is a disgraceful shortage of social housing, even as the city discusses selling off its existing units. The more that our neighbourhoods are “redeveloped”, the harder it becomes for working-class and poor people to find an affordable place to live. To make matters worse, corporate landlords and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) are buying up high-rise apartment buildings, and using all sorts of dirty tricks to evict and displace existing tenants, so that they can flip empty units and jack up rents.

In the face of such blatant attacks on renters, and given the inability or unwillingness of politicians to resolve this crisis, we believe that as tenants we must take immediate steps to defend ourselves – and each other. This means getting organized. Whether you are in an established tenant association, or you just want more information on how to start organizing in your building or on your block, we hope that you join us.

The conference will be organized into three different streams, each divided into four sessions throughout the day. One of these streams, ‘Tenant Organizing 101’ is a full day training session, aimed at providing participants with a broad range of skills to help organize effectively with your neighbours. The other two streams will allow you to pick and choose workshops of interest and jump between streams. If you are planning on attending this event, please fill out this online registration form. Due to the nature of the ‘Tenant Organizing 101’ stream, it is especially important that you sign up in advance if you plan on participating. Though we strongly encourage registration for this event, in order to help ensure that things run as smooth as possible, no one will be turned away at the door.

The location of this event is wheelchair accessible, and the event itself will be entirely free. Lunch, snacks, coffee, and tea provided. To inform us about any special needs you might have please email us at hamiltontenantssolidaritynetwork@gmail.com.

A full schedule of workshops, and presenter bios coming soon!

The HTSN is a volunteer-run network made up of tenants and our allies. For more information, or if you want to help out with promoting this event in your building or your community, please get in touch.
